Cameroon has one of the highest literacy rates in Africa, but its level of corruption – very high even by African standards – blocks its development. Much needs to be done if the country wants to improve its 153rd rank in the 2007 UN Human Development Index.
Our work in Cameroon began in May, 2007, in Hina in the Far North Province. The choice for Hina is deliberate, as we wish to offer support to the population in one of the poorest places in the poorest region of the country. (For instance, the province has the highest rate of illiteracy in the country: 90 % of the women are illiterate and only 40 % of the children attend school). To confront this situation, we run a kindergarten and boarding facilities for children attending primary and secondary school.
